Description:

The state of New York purchased about 15,000 rolling block rifles and carbines from Remington circa 1872. These can be distinguished by the extremely high curved hammer spur, thumb lever for the breechblock that protrudes outward instead of up and the safety locking action which automatically returns the hammer to half cock when the breech is closed. They used the standard Remington military round top, rolling block action with a 22 inch round barrel in 50-70 CF caliber. The upper tang has the standard three line Remington address/patent dates. The left rear of the barrel and left side of the barrel band are stamped with a "B" and the underside of the barrel under the forearm is stamped with a "P". Pinched front and two leaf folding rear sights, saddle ring and bar mounted on the left side of the frame, blue barrel, polished hammer and breechblock, and casehardened remaining parts. Mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock with the correct sharp "HBH" banner cartouche on the left wrist, "326", (regimental number) directly ahead of the buttplate tang and iron carbine buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The barrel retains 95% plus original blue finish with some thinning at the muzzle, a few small areas of flaking and a few dings and scratches. The receiver retains 95% original bright case colors, and the trigger guard retains 65% original case colors with some fading to a smooth dark patina. The buttplate retains 80% original case colors with a smooth silver on the heel. The wood is also excellent with a series of minor dents at the barrel band spring, and overall a few minor pressure dents and scratches. The cartouche is sharp. The markings are clear and crisp. The action is excellent. An excellent example of a New York contract Remington Rolling Block carbine.
