Description:

This is an example of a U.S. Model 1884 Trapdoor carbine that has had some earlier production parts installed. The left side of the barrel is stamped with "V/P/Eagle Head/P" proofmarks at the breech end. Model 1879 rear sight with "C" marked on left side. Casehardened breechblock is marked "U.S./MODEL/1873", found on the Model 1884 through early 1887 and the lock plate is marked with the Eagle and Shield motif followed by "U.S./SPRINGFIELD/1873". One-piece half stock with a single barrel band, saddle ring and bar mounted on the left side and steel buttplate with compartment and "US" marked on the tang. There is a circled "P" directly behind the lower tang.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The barrel retains traces of original blue finish with thinning to a plum patina. The breechblock has a smooth mottled brown patina with some vivid case colors remaining on the inside. The stock is good showing a few gouges on the left side of the buttstock, a dark area around the upper tang and the usual wear, dings and scratches associated with a firearm of this age. The markings are clear. The action is fine.
