Description:

This is a very fine example of an original Springfield Model 1884 Trapdoor rifle that was manufactured in 1887. The lock is marked with the eagle shield motif followed by "U.S./SPRINGFIELD" ahead of the hammer. The breech is the correct low arch model marked "U.S./MODEL/1884". Pinned blade front sight and Buffington rear sight marked "R" on the upper right hand corner. The rear of the barrel is marked with the "V/P/eagle head/P" proof and inspector marks. Blue finish with casehardened breechblock and upper tang. Three click tumbler and mounted with a one-piece stock with metal forend cap, two barrel bands both marked with a "U", slotted button head cleaning rod and steel "U.S." marked buttplate without compartment. "SWP/1887" cartouche on the left wrist and circled script "P" and small stamped "W" on the underside behind the trigger guard. Complete with a brown leather sling.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The barrel, lock and hammer retain 90% original thinning blue finish with some areas fading to a smooth plum patina. The breechblock and upper tang retain 85% original case colors. The stock is also very fine with a dark area on the right rear of the buttstock and overall some scattered minor dings and dents, with crisp cartouche. The markings are crisp and clear. The action is excellent. The sling is excellent.
