Miscellaneous Perdew Style Duck Carvings by Cline McAlpin

This lot consists of two duck carvings done by Cline McAlpin, and copy much of the style of Charles Perdew. McAlpin was one of the better known contemporary carvers who made over a thousand birds. McAlpin used a combination of his own woodworking skills and techniques he learned from Charles Perdew, who was one of the best. McAlpin began carving in 1945, having learned from Perdew, and at first borrowed some of Perdew's patterns to cut out rough body sections and heads, but his later decoys reflected his own style of carving and painting. A large number of McAlpin's carvings were used as decorative pieces only. In this lot is a flying drake mallard pin measuring approximately 3 1/4 inches in length and 2 inches high with a 1 5/8 inch pin with clasp on the back. The pin is nicely carved and beautifully painted with bright colors. The other piece is a mallard hen with her head turned back and bill lying on her back, as known as the sleeper. If one didn't know the difference, they would think this piece was done by Perdew. It measures approximately 6 1/4 inches in length 2 5/8 inches across and 3 inches high.

ConditionBoth are excellent.
