Description:

This is an attractive example of a Winchester Model 1866 rifle manufactured in 1873. The rifle has a blue full octagon barrel, full length magazine and loading gate, brass forearm cap, frame and crescent buttplate and casehardened hammer and lever. The stock and forearm are straight grain black walnut with a varnish finish. Factory sling swivels are mounted on the forearm cap and stock. The barrel has a dovetail mounted sporting style front sight with steel blade and a Henry style folding leaf rear sight with rounded top. The buttplate has a hinged trapdoor. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the two-line legend "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING-ARMS. NEW HAVEN.CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29.1865. OCTOBER 16.1860." ahead of the rear sight. The serial number "118425" is stamped on the lower tang behind the trigger.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The barrel and magazine have an attractive smooth plum brown patina. The barrel edges are sharp and the barrel legend is crisp. The brass receiver is very good with exception of the top chamber having been filed down to ramp to the top barrel flat of the octagon barrel. The receiver has an old covering of lacquer or varnish which has preserved the original patina. The side plate joints are very tight and free from nicks or pry-marks and the receiver itself has very minimal handling wear. The loading gate retains about 70% of the original niter blue finish. The brass buttplate has an attractive age patina and is very good. The hammer retains about 85% of the original case colors. The lever has a smooth brown patina. The stock and forearm have been re-varnished but are fine overall with a few light handling marks. This is a well above average example of a Winchester Model 1866 Rifle.
