Unidentified Confederate Cavalry Sword

Produced by an unknown number of small manufacturers in the South during the course of the Civil War, duplication of Union regulation weapons was a popular activity, with this example showing features of the 1860 pattern U.S. light cavalry sword, with a heavier blade. Measuring 32 inches overall, with a curved 26 1/4 inch single fuller blade, with the final 3 inches of the blade reshaped in to a spear point profile. Brass, 2-branch guard, with "XXXVIII" stamped on the right side, a twisted wire wrapped leather grip, and a roughly shaped helmet pommel. A similar sword, with the same pommel style, is illustrated on page 116 of the Handbook of Confederate Swords by Albaugh.

ConditionFair, with a deep dark patina and scattered pitting and spotting on the blade, brighter on the edges of the point. The brass has aged to a mixed mustard color, with some cracking, dents, and a few small holes. The grip is fair as rewrapped, with cracking in the underlying wood and mild scuffing.
