Historic Presentation Model 1860 Pattern Staff & Field Officer's Sword Inscribed to a Captain in the 22nd Regiment of the New York National Guard in 1899

Measuring 37 3/4 inches overall, with a 31 inch double edge blade, etched and gold washed martial and patriotic designs on each side, "RIDABOCK/& Co/NEW YORK,/N.Y." etched on the left ricasso above a "GERMANY" stamp, and the text "Presented to Capt. J.A. Bell,/by Co.D 22nd Reg't N.G.N.Y./Sept. 30th, 1899." etched on the right side of the blade. Gilt brass hilt, with extensive raised decoration, a 2 branch guard and a ribbed bone grip. With a nickel finished metal scabbard, outfitted with gold washed, cut-through engraved throat, suspension band and tip. Mustered into Federal service for the Civil War, the 22nd was a component of the First Brigade, First Division, I Corps, aka "The Iron Brigade of the East" of the Army of the Potomac, which saw action at the Battle of South Mountain and during the Fredericksburg Campaign. The 22nd was later reformed for Stateside duty during the Spanish-American War, when this blade would have been presented. Captain Bell has not yet been identified.

ConditionVery fine, with some light spotting on the blade, which also has well defined etching and over 95% of the original gold finish. The hilt is fine, with a fine dark patina on the visible brass, and mild handling marks overall. Some light spotting and a mixed, frosted color are visible on the scabbard.
