Description:

The helmet has a 1-piece forged skull that was originally a German munitions grade infantry burgonet from the third quarter of the 16th century with a finial at the top and a swiveling hook on the left side that latches to a stud on the later 1-piece forged bevor. The visor is a later piece. The Almain rivet collar is from the late 16th/early 17th century and has been restored. The breast plate is German infantry from the second half of the 16th century with the gussets and lower half replaced. The back plate is German munitions grade from the last quarter of the 16th century. The tassets are not a pair but are both north Italian from the late 16th century. Consignor's notes indicate that this is a 16th century German half suit that was used on the Spanish frontier in Mexico. Provenance: The William Ashby Collection

Rating Definition:

The composite helmet is very good and has a generally bright appearance with minor pitting overall. The breastplate is fair with moderate pitting overall, a hole at the top center and some cracking and missing material at the bottom center. The back plate is poor with a very large riveted repair on the top right side, a moderate riveted repair on the center left side, some small oxidation holes in the top left, a small hole top center, some absent material on the roped neck area and some cracking and oxidation holes on the bottom right. The tassets are also poor with a number of cracks, chips, holes, replaced areas and soldered repairs. The leather is dry and cracking with one tasset strap broken. Very few pieces of armor survived the humid jungles of Mexico!
