Magnificent Signed 19th Century Tachi with 12th Century Court Style Signed Gold Fittings and Stone Accents

Measuring 37 inches overall, this sword is outfitted with a 25 1/2 inch blade featuring a wavy temper line and finely cut horimono, showing a 7 inch long blooming tree on the right and a 7 inch long dragon climbing a spear on the right, and set into a floral engraved gilt collar. The tsuba is equipped with three contoured spacers on each side, alternating gold and dark alloy with beaded edges, with the main body of the tsuba fitted with a pair of arms simulating a "lobed" profile, with raised vine decortion, raised beaded backgrounds, and a pair of clear stones protected by the arms. The hilt fittings are decorated to match the tsuba with clear, blue and amber colored stones on the kashira, clear stones in floral mounts on the mekugi, and a row of 5 heart shaped blue stones in golden mounts on the right side with beaded gold accents on the reverse. Beneath the grip is the signature "wataguchi no kami tadasuma horidosaku", and an additional signature is present beneath the spacers on the tang. A purple cord hangs from the kashira, with golden sliders and a pair of gold mounted crystals at the ends. The saya is finished in gold flecked black lacquer, with fine gold fittings which match the hilt, accents with clear and blue stones down the right side, clear and amber down the left, a soft leather hanger with gold fittings, and a series of 5 golden ornaments on each side, showing a mixture of horses and fu-dogs.

ConditionExcellent. The blade shows a good state of polish, with minor spotting, a fine temper line, and sharply cut horimono. The rayskin on the grip shows a minor tear and a small amount of separation at the seam. A few small stones are absent from the fittings, which otherwise show only light wear, with superb color and attractive engraving. A beautiful piece, possibly a temple offering or sidearm for a wealthy nobleman, which would make a fine addition to any collection of Japanese edged weapons.
