Description:

Flared cannon muzzle barrel with a triangular block front sight and a grooved block rear sight. The front of the barrel is adorned with an inlaid dragon in flight, 7 5/8 inches long, primarily gold with silver accents, and a 1 5/8 inch diameter silver mon behind the rear sight, which appears to be the crossed feathers of the Asano clan. The Asano clan held Hiroshima Castle and the surrounding fief for most of the Edo era, and are most famous for Asano Naganori, whose death in 1701 set off a 2 year revenge plot that would become known as the story of the Forty-Seven Ronin. The lockwork is a combination of brass and iron, with a swiveling flashpan cover, brass firing stud and a brass handrest extension. Fitted with a sturdy hardwood (mahogany) stock, which is equipped with a ramrod and stamped with a series of markings between the breech band and firing stud. Notes from the consignor state that these translate to "7th year Ansci (tiger) year spring" and "7th year Kayu Ashiu (Awa Country)" representing a gap of 110 years.

Rating Definition:

Very fine with a brown and gray patina overall on the steel, scattered bright areas and spotting. The gold and silver are in excellent condition, showing a dark patina on the silver. The stock is very fine with some minor crazing of the varnish and mild dings. The markings are sharp and crisp. Mechanically excellent.
