Scarce Very Fine 10 Gauge Colt Model 1883 Hammerless Double Barrel Shotgun with Factory Letter

Manufactured in 1895, Colt manufactured approximately 7,366 Model 1883 shotguns between 1883 and 1895. Double ivory bead sights on the matte concave, dolls head extended solid rib which is marked with the one line address at the breech end. The bottom of the action is marked "PATENTED/AUG. 22. SEPT. 19, 1882". The matching serial number is marked on the lower tang, water table, barrel flat and forearm hardware. Double triggers, brown finished Damascus barrels, casehardened action, blue remaining parts, tang mounted safety and mounted with a checkered splinter forearm with ebony forend insert and pistol grip stock with checkered Rampant Colt hard rubber buttplate and gold initial oval. The accompanying factory letter verifies serial number, gauge, 32 inch barrels, weight of 10 lbs. 10 oz., blue finish, wood stock, Grade 1 configuration and that it was shipped as 1 to E.K. Tryon, Jr. & Company, Philadelphia, Pa. on March 1, 1900. The serial numbers on these shotguns went to 8366 making this shotgun one of the last manufactured. The Model 1883 shotgun is considered one of the finest of all the American made shotguns. Length of pull is 14 3/8 inches.

ConditionVery fine. The barrels retain 75% of the original brown Damascus pattern with some thinning on the breech end sides. The break lever and trigger guard retain 90% original blue finish with some thinning to a smooth gray patina from normal usage. The action shows 80% original bright case colors with some fading to gray on the bottom and a smooth silver gray patina on the fences. The wood is also very fine with several minor to moderate scratches on the stock and overall some scattered minor dents and dings, with crisp checkering. The markings are clear and crisp. The mechanics are fine.
