Colt U.S. Contract Single Action Cavalry Model revolver manufactured in 1891. This very late production revolver is stamped with the "R.A.C." mark of Ordnance sub-inspector Rinaldo A. Carr on the underside of the barrel, bottom of the frame and side of the cylinder. The "U.S." property mark is stamped on the left side of the frame behind the patent markings. "P" proofmarks are stamped on the underside of the barrel and on the side of the cylinder. The barrel is roll-stamped with the 4th style elongated block legend "COLT'S PT. F.A. MFG. Co. HARTFORD CT. U.S.A.". The left side of the frame is roll-stamped with the late Colt two-line/three-date patent markings adopted in 1890 around serial number 134,000. The inside of the loading gate is stamped with the assembly number "1964". A Colt "K" sub-inspection mark is stamped on the trigger guard behind the serial number and in the hammer well above the firing pin hole. The full serial number, "140070" is visible on the frame, trigger guard and back strap. The partial serial number, "0070" is stamped on the side of the cylinder and written in pencil on the inside of the grip. All of the visible serial numbers match. The revolver has the late pattern oval ejector rod head adopted around serial number "113000" and used until the end of U.S. contract production at serial number "140361". The revolver has the Colt blue finish on the barrel, ejector housing cylinder, trigger guard and back strap. The frame, hammer and loading gate have a color casehardened finish. The one-piece black walnut grip is oil-finished. This is one of the very last examples of a Single Action Cavalry Model revolver manufactured by Colt. Most of these late production revolvers were altered to 'Artillery' configuration between 1896 and 1903; original unaltered examples of Colt Single Action Cavalry Model revolvers are scarce.
