Fine U.S. Colt Model 1873 Artillery Model Single Action Army Revolver

Originally manufactured in 1876, this was one of the Model 1873 Cavalry Single Action Army revolvers that was Colt/Arsenal refurbished to produce the Artillery Model revolvers. Performed as a comprehensive overhaul of the Army's Colt revolvers, the idea was to produce as many functional revolvers as possible, often combining parts from multiple source handguns, perform a full refurbish, and typically take the barrels in from the Cavalry standard 7 1/2 inches to the Artillery style 5 1/2 inches. Used as a supplemental arm for the 38 Double Action revolvers, the Artillery became highly popular with soldiers involved with the Philippine Insurrection, who found the knockdown power of the 45 Colt cartridge outclassed that of the 38. Fixed sights, with the one line elongated block Hartford address, "D.F.C." Clark inspection stamp, and "5933" on the barrel. Black powder frame, with "L.D." (Lewis Draper) inspection mark, two line/ two date patent markings next to the "U.S." property stamp, "H" in the hammer cut and "991" on the loading gate. Faint "D.F.C." and "P" stamps on the cylinder, with no visible number. The trigger guard is numbered "11070" and the back strap "1717" with a "P" stamped on the underside of the grip and a faint cartouche (possibly "APC") on the left side.

ConditionVery fine with 60% of the arsenal blue finish, with areas of gray patina, bright wear along the high edges, and scattered handling marks. Mild pitting is visible on the hammer. Frame is very fine with 70% of the bright original factory case colors visible, with silvering on the remainder. Grips are very good, with minor chips at the toes, pressure dents and scratches. Half cock notch needs rebuilt, otherwise mechanically very good. A solid U.S. Colt Model 1873 'Artillery' Revolver in very fine condition.
