Description:

This extraordinary Semi-Deluxe Winchester Model 1886 Saddle Ring carbine was manufactured in May 1914 and is accompanied by a Winchester factory letter dated Oct 1994, verifying the exact configuration of this carbine. The factory letter lists this carbine as being sold through the Abercrombie & Fitch Co., New York, in June 1915 and is correctly listed as being in the rare "50/110" High Velocity cartridge. This is actually a very rare model and caliber as it is a very late production carbine when they were not making or selling many of these as everyone wanted the new smokeless powder cartridges. It has the standard carbine barrel, fitted with a standard carbine post front sight with nickel-silver blade but it is fitted with a very rare carbine three leaf folding "WINCHESTER EXPRESS", rear sight. The leafs are marked "50, 1 and 2 (for 100 and 200 yards). The left side of the receiver still has the original saddle ring and stud. The top/left side of the barrel is stamped with the two-line legend "-MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO./NEW HAVEN CONN U.S.A. PAT. OCT.14.1884. JAN.20.1885". The breech end of the barrel is marked with the caliber designation "50 EX" and the top of the barrel and receiver are both stamped with the Winchester "W/P" proofmark. The upper receiver tang has the three line factory marking of "MODEL 1886/---WINCHESTER---/TRADE MARK REG. In U.S. PAT. OFF.". The lower tang is serial numbered "151985A". The barrel, magazine, barrel bands and receiver are blued; the hammer, loading lever and buttplate have a color casehardened finish. The forend and buttstock are both standard straight grain walnut. This beautiful, late production Winchester Model 1886 carbine with the one special order feature of a Winchester Express rear sight and chambered for the rare and very desirable .50 Winchester Express cartridge is extremely rare.

Rating Definition:

Extremely fine overall with the barrel and magazine tube retaining 98% of the original blue finish. The receiver retains 65% of the original Winchester blue finish with the balance having turned a silvery patina, mixed with some brown spots from flaking. The buttplate retains 90% of its case colors and the hammer retains 65% of its case colors with some shiny rub marks on the sides. The cocking lever retains 60% of its case colors, with more color in the protected areas with a more subdued colors towards the loop. The stock and forend are both in very fine condition with 95% of the original factory oil finish with some slight wear, both showing minor handling marks and scratches. There is a small professional stock repair on the right side at the intersection of the back of the receiver and upper tang directly under the hammer. Still a very rare and very nice looking Special Order Winchester Model 1886 carbine in a highly desirable 50/110 High Velocity caliber.
