Description:

Measuring 5 1/4 inches wide and 7 3/4 inches tall, this book is bound in brown leather, with gold leaf edges and "Autographs" in gold fill on the front cover. The opening page in the book is signed "Spencer Meade", son of Union Major General George Meade, commander of the Army of the Potomac at the Battle of Gettysburg. From General Meade's surviving letters of the era, it is known that Spencer (often recorded by the affectionate nickname "Pennie") was a collector of autographs, made visits to his father's camps in the field where he would have the opportunity to personally meet the men whose signatures are on these pages, and also had correspondence with interesting signatures forwarded to him by the General. The first page of signatures is signed by both General U.S. Grant and General George Meade. Approximately 28 of the pages are signed, showing a wide assortment of Civil War Union Army personalities, mostly signing directly into the book, except for a few which are pasted-in from signed correspondence and other sources. Included among the signatures are then-future President Ulysses S. Grant, Generals George Sykes and Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain of Gettysburg fame, William Tecumseh Sherman, and Jefferson C. Davis (note: the Union General, not Confederate President Jefferson F. Davis). Many of the signatures include the rank and assignment of the signer, with a few also including dates, chiefly falling in the 1864-1865 range. The book was acquired from the estate of George Meade Easby the great grandson of General Meade and is accomplainied by a letter of authentication from the executor of the George Meade Easby estate.

Rating Definition:

Fine overall with repaired binding and some mild wear on the exterior and a few light stains. A prime chance to acquire an instant collection of autographs from some of the best leaders and top minds of the United States Army during the Civil War.
