Excellent U.S. Model 1863 Double Rifle-Musket

Unique U.S. Model 1863 Double Rifle Musket manufactured by J.P. Lindsay in 1864. The Double Rifle Musket featured two hammers with a single trigger to fire two superposed charges. The musket has a two-leaf folding rear sight, bayonet lug front sight, iron furniture with screw-fastened barrel bands and a straight shank tulip head ramrod. The barrel, hammers and iron furniture are finished National Armory Bright. The stock is oil finished black walnut. The top of the breech flat is stamped "LINDSAY/PATENT'D OCT.9.1860". The buttplate heel is stamped "U.S.". The breech, barrel, rear sight and barrel bands are stamped with single letter inspection marks. Two Ordnance inspection marks consisting of the script initials "ADK" in an oval are stamped on the left stock flat. The Ordnance Department purchased 1000 of these rifled muskets which were reportedly issued and used in combat by the 16th Michigan Infantry. The Double Rifle-Muskets proved unpopular when the two charges tended to fire simultaneously.

ConditionVery fine. The once cleaned rifle retains most of the National Armory bright style finish. The rear sight has been cleaned and shows only traces of the original dull blue finish. The stock is in excellent condition and retains virtually all of the oil finish. There is a hairline crack present in the wrist. The edges on the lock mortise, barrel channel are sharp. Stock wear is limited to a few insignificant storage marks. This is an excellent example of a unique primary U.S. Civil War longarm.
