Manufactured circa 1872-1873, this is a very nice example of one of approximately only 7,000 Model 1871-72 Open Top revolvers manufactured. The Model 1871-1872 was the first non-conversion Colt cartridge revolver, and was a direct predecessor of the hugely successful Colt Single Action Army revolver. The top of the barrel is marked "-- ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW - YORK U.S. AMERICA --" and the left side of the frame is marked "COLTS/PATENT". The cylinder is roll engraved with the Texas naval scene and "COLTS PATENT No "606". The matching serial number is also marked on the barrel, frame, trigger guard and back strap. The loading gate is numbered "551". Blade front sight and the rear sight is an integral notch on the breech end of the barrel. Blue finish with a brass trigger guard/front strap, and fitted with a one piece smooth walnut grip on the Army grip frame. The Accompanying factory letter verifies the caliber, barrel length, finish with grips as "Not Listed" and it was shipped as 1 of 75 to J.P. Moores Sons in New York, New York on September 19, 1872. Also comes with a letter of appraisal/authentication dated August 21, 2011 from David J. Palmiter stating in part that he would rate the revolver "as one of the best of its kind today." and that in his opinion the revolver has never been fired.

Very good plus. The revolver has a smooth mottled brown patina with strong original blue finish in protected areas. The brass has a semi-bright appearance. The grip has been refinished and remains very good with some mild lower edge wear, a tiny chip on each toe and light overall handling marks. The cylinder scene is mostly visible and the markings are legible. The action fine.
