Description:

This is a solid example of an early M1892 Krag rifle that has been arsenal converted into the M1896 configuration. The rifle falls into the second series of M1892 Krag rifles. The side of the receiver is marked "U.S. 1894, SPRINGFIELD ARMORY" next to the serial number and it has the original style stock with the plugged cleaning rod slot/hole, the second pattern front barrel band with double straps on top, the later bolt with the extractor with pin and the receiver has also been altered for the extractor pin. It still has the original finger groove stock with a "SWP/1894" cartouche, with a double circled "P" proof behind the trigger guard. The stock is fitted with the original solid smooth buttplate with a curved toe, with no butt-trap and short handguard that meets the front edge of the receiver fitted with a 1896 rear sight. These are very desirable as a U.S. military service rifle as most of these rifles saw heavy use in the Spanish-American War and early 1900s until the development of the M1903 rifle. Complete with an original 1902/U.S. marked Krag bayonet and scabbard.

Rating Definition:

Very good with an even brown patina overall showing heavier oxidation on the receiver and bolt assembly. The stock and handguard are fine plus with a nice dark matching color on the handguard and stock with a clear, visible cartouche and proof. The stock shows minor handling marks and light gouges in some areas. The bayonet retains its original bright polish finish with some minor oxidation spots with light sharpening on the edge and a browned out grip area. The scabbard retains 80% of it finish which has all browned out. Mechanically functions, but safety is broken.
