Description:

This is a very fine example of a standard U.S. Springfield Model 1898 Krag rifle. These rifles were the standard service rifle from 1892 until 1903 when the 1903 Springfield was introduced. The left side of the receiver is marked "U.S./MODEL 1898. SPRINGFIELD ARMORY/307181". These rifle has integral front sight base with the pinned blade front sight and an adjustable ladder rear sight graduated from "2 to 20", (200-2000 yards). It has the milled barrel bands, trigger guard and buttplate. It is mounted with a full length walnut stock and top handguard. The stock has a boxed script, "JSA/1901" inspection cartouche on the left side and a single circled "P" proof in the pistol grip area. The right side of the buttstock has been stamped in large numbers "1235", probably indicating a rack number at a National Guard unit.

Rating Definition:

Very fine with 85% of the original blue finish showing light fading and thinning on the receiver overall, and exposed area of the barrel. The bolt has its original Arsenal bright polished finish. The reoiled stock and handguard are both very fine with a nice light brown walnut color with the original oil finish, and a clear cartouche and stock proofs. The stock shows scattered handling marks on the sides and underside and a couple of heavier pressure dents on the lower sides probably from a rifle rack.
