Description:

This is a beautiful example of a scarce Model 1892 Webley & Son Army revolver complete with rare engraved personalization on the underside of the barrel and an original English retailer oak case. This beautiful revolver has been personalized on the barrel with the engraving: "Major J. B. Woon 40th PATHANS". This unit, the 40th Pathans was an infantry regiment of the British Indian Army and was raised or established in 1858, as the Shahjehanpur Levy. It was designated as the 40th Pathans in 1903 and became 5th Battalion (Pathans) 14th Punjab Regiment in 1922. Major J. B. Woon served in this unit and later became Lieutenant General. In 1947 the unit was allocated to the Pakistan Army, where it continues to exist as 16th Battalion of the "The Punjab Regiment". From the start this unit served in numerous battles and engagements in the Far East up and through World War II for the British Empire. Although there is very limited information on Major Woon and his roll with this unit a through additional search could glean far more information on Major Woon and his entire service record. The barrel rib is marked, "P. WEBLEY & SON. LONDON & BIRMINGHAM" with the left side of the barrel marked "455/476", with a standard fixed blade front sight and fixed rear sight. The left side of the top trap of the frame is roll stamped "WG MODEL" with the lower frame area stamped, "WEBLEY/PATENTS" followed by the "Winged Bullet/W&S" trademark. The right side of the frame is stamped with serial number, "5984" with the rear of the cylinder stamped "964" and "8" between the chambers. This revolver still retains the early "Church Steeple" style cylinder flutes. The frame has a birds head style grip used on these early models and is fitted with checkered vulcanite rubber grips with a lanyard loop on the butt. It comes with a oak storage/display case with poplar wood bottom with brass reinforcing screws on the lid and base. The top of the lid has a round brass escutcheon plate inlaid in the center that is engraved "F. H./24th Regiment". If you know your history this was the "24th Foot" infantry Regiment, which was another historic British unit that was involved in numerous battles throughout the world; most notability was during the ZULU wars in 1879/1880; specifically at Isandhlwana on 22nd Jan, 1879 and also at Rorke's Drift, 22nd-23rd Jan 1879. The case is lined with navy blue fabric and has six compartments including a 30 round cartridge block, (no ammunition included) which includes a brass cleaning rod, a small square glass oil container with a silver lid and a walnut handled screwdriver. Certainly this revolver and case are worth doing considerable detailed historical research.

Rating Definition:

Excellent with 90% plus of the original nickel plated finish with only minor high edge wear overall. The forward portion of the cylinder is flaked. The markings are clear and sharp. The vulcanized grips are also excellent with nice distinct checkering on both sides, light wear across the tops of the checkering. The case is very fine with the corners intact, the lid showing some minor scratches and handling marks overall with some age cracks and minor loss of varnish on the rear section of the lid. The blue felt interior is all intact and shows only minor wear on the bottom. The various accessories are all excellent. This is a beautiful high end and very historic early Webley revolver with inscribed barrel markings.
