This is a beautiful example of an exceptionally rare late production 4th variation, "J.P. Sauer & Sohns" model 38H pistol that has been engraved during the period, possible by the factory. This beautiful example has 98% of the metal surfaces engraved in a wonderful, traditional, Germanic deeply chiseled "Acorn & Oak Leaf" engraved pattern with very fine punch dot background for shading with a wonderful geometric, cross-hatched pattern over the chamber area and the upper rear grip strap. The slide is marked "CAL 7.65" on the left side. The serial number "484587" is located on the left rear side of the frame and there is a late "Eagle/N" proof mark located on the right side of the frame behind the grips, the upper rear end of the slide, and the muzzle of the barrel. The left front trigger guard bow has a small "Eagle/37" Waffenamt proof, indicating acceptance by the Army. It is fitted with the standard late war black checkered plastic grips with the intertwined "SuS" monogram for "Sauer & Sohns" on the left grip. The floor plate of the magazine is also nicely engraved to match the pistol and also has the same intertwined "SuS" monogram.

Very fine with 98% of the period refinished blued finish overall with a slight amount of wear on the front edges of the slide from being in a holster. The engraving is sharp and distinct. The replacement grips are also in very fine condition with nice distinct checkering and markings on both sides. Mechanically needs minor work as double action doesn't always engage. This is an attractive engraved J.P. Sauer & Sohns Model 38H pocket pistol.
