Historic Nagoya Arsenal Type 38 Bolt Action Rifle with World War II O.S.S. Capture Papers and Service Records, a Patch from the Jingpaw Rangers and a China-Burma-India Patch

This is an exceptional example of a Nagoya Arsenal Type 38 Series 27 rifle. The top of the receiver is marked with a crisp and clear mum over the Type 38 marking, and the left side is marked with the Series symbol, serial number and arsenal marking. Inverted "v" front sight with guards and folding ladder rear sight. Mounted with a smooth pistol grip stock with a brown leather sling. With a capture certificate made out to a Technician Keith J. Brown, dated 25 June 1945 for this rifle, as well as two shoulder patches, one in the China-Burma-India style, and another marked "USA/JINGPAW/RANGERS". The capture paper is headed for OSSSU Detachment 101, which performed guerilla warfare, target marking, and aircrew rescue in the CBI Theatre, chiefly Burma, and bears the names of Colonel W.R. Peers (Det. 101's CO after 1943), Lieutenant Pratt and Captain Cox (both identified as OSS men). Also included are photocopies from Brown's enlistment records, which include records of his assignment to Detachment 101. To our knowledge we have never seen capture papers from an OSS unit. From the Putnam Green Collection.

ConditionVery fine, with 85% of the original blue finish, showing some areas of brown patina and mild handling marks overall. Mixed numbers. Stock is fine, with a number of dents and dings overall, along with some chipping on the right side of the forearm. Some cracking and tearing is visible on the sling. Mechanically excellent.
