Description:

Manufactured by the New Haven Arms Co. circa 1857. The carbine has a 16 1/2 inch blue octagon barrel and integral magazine, brass receiver and crescent buttplate, and casehardened hammer and loading lever. The top barrel flat is marked "NEW HAVEN CONN. PATENT FEB. 14, 1854". This modified legend was introduced in April of 1857 after Oliver Winchester took control of the Volcanic Repeating Arms Co., and reorganized it as the New Haven Arms Co. The investments of shirt manufacturer Oliver Winchester in the Volcanic Repeating Arms Co. led to the establishment of the New Haven Arms Co. and the Winchester Repeating Arms Co. A rack number "7" is stamped on the bottom of the receiver. The serial number "22" is on the shank of each of the tang, buttplate screws, heel of the stock, buttplate and left side of the lower tang. The barrel is fitted with a German silver blade front sight and there is an elevation adjustable rear sight dovetailed on the top of the receiver. Mounted with a smooth varnished walnut stock with a brass crescent buttplate. The revolutionary Volcanic repeating carbines and pistols featured self-cocking lever actions, integral magazines and were chambered for a cartridge with self-contained propellant and primer. Although the Volcanic Pistols and Carbines were not a commercial success, the development of reliable cartridges allowed the Volcanic Lever Action and integral magazine to serve as the basis for the Henry Rifle and the Model 1866 Winchester.

Rating Definition:

Extremely fine. The barrel retains 60% plus original blue finish, mainly in the protected area of the lower flat, mixed with mottled brown patina. There are a few small areas of minor pitting. The hammer and lever have case color patterns with the balance a smooth brown patina. The attractive, exceptional original receiver and buttplate have a natural untouched dark mustard yellow aged patina. The stock is very fine with almost all of the original varnish remaining and showing a few minor dents and light scratches. The markings are clear. Mechanically excellent.
