Description:

This is an example of a U.S. Springfield Armory Model 1871 Rolling Block Rifle made on a royalty agreement with Remington in 1871 and 1872 with a total production of 10,000. The left side of the frame is marked "MODEL 1871, the right side with the eagle shield motif over "U.S./SPRINGFIELD/1872" and the upper tang is marked with two line Remington patent dates. The rifle is finished armory bright with a casehardened action and trigger guard. Square base front sight and adjustable folding leaf rear sight graduated to 900 yards. The rifle has an iron double stop cleaning rod with slotted tip, sling swivel mounted on the front of the trigger guard and a swivel on the forward barrel band. The rifle is mounted with a smooth full length walnut forearm with iron end cap and straight grip stock with a clear "ESA" oval cartouche on the left wrist and carbine style buttplate marked "U.S." on the tang. Directly ahead of the tang is stamped "53". Comes with an unmarked socket bayonet.

Rating Definition:

Very good plus. The barrel has a semi bright appearance with some minor spotting and scattered discoloration. The receiver retains 30% original case colors and the trigger guard is a mix of faded original case colors and smooth mottled gray patina. The wood is good with exception of a 3 inch minor crack on the right upper wrist, a long noticeable scratch on the right toe area of the stock and overall some minor dents and shallow gouges. The markings are clear. The action is excellent. The bayonet is good with a dark patina and minor spotting.
