Description:

Introduced in 1929, the "Brownshirt" uniform was developed by Heinrich Himmler, and in many ways represented the growing distance between the SS and their on-paper superiors, the SA, in particular the growing amount of black that would become a signature of the Allgemeine SS. The grouping consists of the following; 1) SS kepi, black felt exterior construction with darkened alloy party eagle and silvered brass deaths head badges on the front, and a black leather sweatband with black buttons. Orange cloth inner lining, with "57 1/2" and "Landes=Lief.=Gen.d./Kurschner=u.Mutzenmacher/Handwerks/BERLIN NO 18 Lieferjahr 1939" under the sweat diamond and "Ukrainische/Lagerschneiderel/PRACIA/(illeg) ink stamped to the side. 2) Brown shirt, marked "49 40" on the collar and inner lining, with the black and white shoulder board, silver ribbon "old fighter" chevron on the right sleeve, black and white trimmed collar with tabs for a Scharführer (squad leader) in the 73rd SS Regiment (Middle Franconia, Bavaria), a red armband with black cloth border bands and a stitched white and black circle and swastika, and a blank black arm cuff with blue edge trim. 3) Unmarked pants, in the "riding breeches" style, with zip-up calves and a button fly. 4) Black leather boots, marked "168/VORWERK" on the heels, with steel toe plates and soft brown leather inner lining.

Rating Definition:

1) Exterior is good. Brim and interior lining shows some crude stitching. 2) Very good overall, with some light stains and handling marks. A few buttons are absent from the front, and the shoulder board has come partially undone. 3) Fair. The rear of the pants have been taken in. Mild handling marks. 4) Good, with some loss of the toe plate on the right boot and mild handling marks overall.
