Frederick Volck (Gemran-Confederate American 1833-1891) immigrated to Richmond Virginia. With the onset of the Civil War he was employed in the Confederate Naval Ordinance Department. Volck took exact measurements of Robert E. Lee and his horse, Traveler. In 1863 he sculpted a terra cotta bust of Lee to rally the troops but due to a limited supply of bronze only a few were cast in bronze. Mounted on an octagonal marble plinth. Stands 19 inches tall x 8 inches wide x 12 inches wide. Weighs 40 pounds.
Very good as refinished to near mint with a few small areas of minor wear.
