Description:

This exceptional Colt Model 1905 D.A. revolver was manufactured circa 1906 as part of a 926 gun contract for the Marine Corps. The revolver has the checkered walnut grips, small grip with rounded butt and two stop cylinder that revolves counter clock-wise that distinguish it from the other Colt New Army and Navy Revolver series. The revolver has the Colt high polish, commercial quality blue finish on the barrel, frame and cylinder. The hammer has fire blue top surfaces with bright polished sides and the trigger is fire blue. The ejector rod and lanyard loop are casehardened. The butt is roll stamped "U.S./M.C." to the rear of the lanyard swivel and the Marine Corps serial number "No./399" in front it. The Colt assembly number, "973" is stamped on the inside of the frame, on the inside of the crane, on the cylinder latch and penciled on the inside of each grip. The cylinder is numbered "011". The left side of the trigger guard bow is stamped with a five-pointed star with "VJ" in the center. This marking indicates that the revolver was returned to Colt for repair. The repair almost certainly dates from the period of service. The top of the barrel is roll stamped with the two line Colt Hartford address and 1884, 1888 and 1895 patent dates and the left side of the barrel is roll stamped with the caliber designation "COLT.D.A.38". The circled Rampant Colt trademark is roll stamped on the left rear of the frame. Most of the 926 Marine Model 1905 D.A. revolvers saw service use and surviving examples are scarce. Colt expert R.L. Wilson considered the Model 1905 Marine Corps D.A. revolver to be "one of the rarest items in the field of Colt collecting".

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The revolver retains 97% of the bright original high polish blue finish. Wear is limited to a small spot of surface discoloration on the right side of the barrel and some scattered and very minor handling marks on the frame and cylinder. The trigger, hammer and frame screws retain nearly all of the nitre blue finish. The grips have sharp checkering, retain nearly all of the original varnish and are excellent. The action functions perfectly. This is a top quality example of a scarce Colt Model 1905 Marine Corps D.A. revolver that would be a standout piece in the most advanced collection of Colt martial arms.
