A) English Percussion Pistol

Manufacturer: British
Model: Percussion
Type: Pistol
Gauge: 67
Barrel: 5 inch octagon
Finish: brown/casehardened
Grip:
Stock: walnut
Item Views: 1375
Serial Number:
Catalog Page: 29
Class: Antique
Description:

These two pistols are nearly identical in construction. They may have been designed as a dueling set, but their smoothbore octagon barrels are rather short for that purpose. The barrels have golden bands and plaques marked "LONDON" at the breech, and each pistol has bead front and notch rear sights. Aside from the main section of the barrel, they feature scroll engraving throughout and fishlike faces with sharp teeth on the hammers. Above the engraving on the back action lock plates, they are marked "PARSONS". Each is mounted on a full length stock with German silver forend caps and escutcheons, bright unmarked initial plates, and checkering at the wrists. They come in a nice wooden custom case with a fitted felt interior that contains: tools, a compartment of patches, a small flask, ball mold, a Remington Arms Company Inc. percussion cap tin with wooden cover and a wooden container with a number of lead balls.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The barrel has mixture of brown finish and patina with case colors along with the golden bands and plaque well retained in the breech section. The upper tang has some traces of case colors but has mostly silvered out. The lock and hammer have traces of case colors with a smooth brown patina overall. The lower components have a dark brown patina and oxidation. The German silver components remain bright. The stock is very good with crisp checkering, a glossy varnish, a dent on the upper edge of the forend on the right, a small crack in the ramrod groove, a few small chips, and some minor handling/storage type marks overall. Mechanically fine with crisp engraving. The modern custom case is very good with some shelf/storage type wear on the exterior and some minor stains and minor tears on the interior lining. The accessories are good to very good overall.

Grip:
Stock: walnut
Item Views: 1375

As described in A.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The barrel has a mixture of brown patina, brown finish, and pitting. The gold stripes and plaque remains complete and there are some traces of case colors at the breech and barrel tang. The other components also have a brown patina with some dark oxidation particularly on the lower components. The wood is very fine with crisp checkering and some slight scratches and minor dings. Mechanically fine with crisp engraving and bright German silver components. Overall, this is a very fine set that was likely given as a gift to a well-to-do gentleman in the 19th century.
