Description:

This flintlock has a concave rib marked "LE PAGE A PARIS" between to foliate motifs in gold fill. The right side of the barrel is marked "C.60", and the barrel tang is marked "No. 17". The lock plates have "LE PAGE/*A PARIS*" surrounded by light border designs. The Le Page firm is known for high quality and accuracy. The firm held titles as royal gunmakers throughout many governmental changes and produced many hunting rifles, fowling pieces, and hand guns along with spectacular presentation pieces for the French kings, Napoleon, and later presidents including some of the finest combinations of gunsmithing and artistic work ever produced. The front of the rib has a German silver blade front sight. It is fitted on a half stock with checkering on the wrist and forend, "duckbill" carving on the bottom of the butt, a raised cheek piece with carved accent, sling swivels, and a casehardened buttplate with "DM" monogram. Most of the other components also have a casehardened finish aside from the barrels which have a blue finish. It includes a single ramrod with flared brass tip.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. 98% plus of the blue finish remains with only a few minor scratches and a small spot of loss near the muzzle. 95% of the deep case colors remain with some slight fading on the lower tang. The stock is very good with crisp checkering, several minor scrapes and dings, and a few small chips. Part of the wedge chipped off. Mechanically excellent with clear markings. This exceptional example is a perfect companion to the larger bore Le Page double rifle also in this auction.
