English "Chief Grade" Presentation Percussion Conversion Fusil or Fowling Piece

This fusil or fowling piece was converted in period to the percussion cap system and is similar in most respects to "Chief" or "Chieftain" grade flintlocks given as gifts to influential members of Native communities during councils with the British, but it has a distinctly different inlay medallion on the wrist which more closely resembles how one might imagine a Roman senator as opposed to the more common Indian with bow and quiver. The maker marking on the lock plate is all but gone, but other markings that are commonly seen on "chief grade" firearms are visible including a boars head with an arrow and horn behind the hammer, a shield and arrow motif on the side plate and trigger guard (with pineapple style finial), and another boar head and horn on the buttplate tang. The barrel is marked "LONDON" on top and has the "*/RW" mark that is associated with Richard Wilson and later his son along with three unclear proofs on the left flat. It has a blade front and notch rear sights and is fitted on a full length stock with some checkering at the wrist. A ramrod is included.

ConditionFair as converted to percussion. It has an overall brown patina with significant pitting at the breech. The brass components have an attractive aged patina. The hammer is partially damaged at the striking end. Some of the markings are well faded or not legible, but the engraving is generally clear. The medallion is also in very good shape with the striking relief engraved face and the scroll border bright and the background dark. The stock is fine as repaired with some slivers absent and a few hairline cracks along the forend, smoothed checkering and various slight scratches and dings. Mechanically fine.
