Kitland & Co. Marked "Chief Grade" Presentation Flintlock Fusil

This flintlock is marked "Kitland & Co" followed by a "broad arrow" mark on the lock plate below the pan and has a boar head and horn motif at the rear. "LONDON" is marked on the top of the barrel. Arrow motifs are on the side plate and trigger guard (which has a pineapple style finial) and an arrow and boar head motif is on the buttplate tang. The most distinctive aspect is the plaque with "Roman nosed" Indian equipped with a bow and quiver on the wrist. Guns with this plaque are often referred to as "Chief" or "Chieftain" grade arms. Charles Hanson notes in the book THE NORTHWEST GUN (p. 54): "It is believed that many of these guns were distributed to allied tribes in the years just preceding the War of 1812." Other sources also suggest that arms ornamented in this style as opposed to the traditional "Northwest" pattern were used as gifts during council sessions to foster good will among potential allies and were given to influential tribe and clan members including but not exclusively leaders starting near 1812 and continuing into the 1830s. The "Kitland" marking is somewhat odd given that "Ketland & Co." along with other "Ketland" gun makers have been recorded; it is thus possibly a spelling error. It includes a hickory ramrod. The full length stock has some marks on the right side that resemble "Co".

ConditionFair. The barrel has a pewter gray patina with light pitting and some oxidation, some light engraving visible on the upper left flat and a faint "LONDON" mark. The re-engraved lock has an artificial brown patina. The brass components have an attractive aged patina with some minor scratches and marks. The medallion has a bright silvery appearance with a dark background and some golden coloration. The full length stock is good as repaired and re-oiled with some scratches, dings and marks.
