Description:

An estimated 5,151 later production Model 1855 percussion rifles were made at Harper's Ferry during the years leading up to the Civil War with a 33 inch barrel, two barrel bands and an iron patch box from 1857 to 1861. The survival rate of these rifles is low and, as with most Civil War weapons, examples in good condition are very scarce. The rifle is equipped with a blade front sight, two leaf rear sight and a bayonet lug. The lock plate is dated "1859" at the rear, and "U.S./HARPER'S FERRY" is stamped ahead of the Maynard primer door which has an American eagle motif. The barrel is also dated "1859" and has the standard proof/inspection marks. It includes a tulip head iron ramrod with a swollen shaft and an extra percussion nipple is inside the patch box. The rifle is mounted on a straight grip stock with a "U.S." marked carbine buttplate, sling swivels on the trigger guard and front band, and two cartouches on the left flat. This example has iron furniture aside from the brass forend cap.

Rating Definition:

Very good plus. The metal surfaces remain mostly bright with some patina and extensive patches of pitting especially on the barrel. The forend cap has an aged patina. The stock is also fine with a chip on the right side at the junction with the lock plate and various scrapes. The markings aside from one of the cartouches are crisp. Mechanically excellent.
