Description:

Navy Model Percussion revolver manufactured by the Savage Revolving Fire-Arms Co. of Middletown, Connecticut, c. 1861-1865. The Ordnance Department purchased 11,984 of these distinctive revolvers during the Civil War. The revolver features a unique heart shaped trigger guard with round cocking lever, off-set hammer, six-shot cylinder, octagon barrel and hinged loading lever. The two-piece walnut grips are oil-finished. The barrel, frame and cylinder have a highly polished blue finish. The loading lever, trigger guard, cocking piece and hammer are color casehardened. The top of the frame is roll-stamped "SAVAGE R.F.A. Co.MIDDLETOWN.CT./H.S. NORTH PATENTED JUNE 17 1856/JANUARY 18 1859/MAY 15 1860" in four lines. A partially faded cartouche is stamped on the lower left side of the grip, and Ordnance single letter sub-inspection marks are stamped on some components.

Rating Definition:

Good. The revolver retains traces of the faded original blue finish and some traces of the case colors with an otherwise gray-brown patina. There is some light pitting and scattered minor marks/scratches. The grips are good with a faint cartouche, some small chips at the edges and otherwise only light handling and storage marks. Mechanically fine with clear frame markings.
