Description:

This is a fine example of one of just 6,150 New Model 1863 rifles made without the saber bayonet lug. Many of these rifles were converted after the Civil War, but this example avoided alteration and retains the original percussion system with the pellet primer system. It is marked with the standard Sharps and Lawrence patent markings on the frame, the three line Sharps address ahead of the rear sight and "NEW MODEL 1863" at the breech on the barrel, "M.N.M" inspection marks on the left barrel flat and ahead of the buttplate tang, faint cartouches on the left side of the wrist and butt, and "O.B.G" on the bottom of the forearm near the junction with the frame, a few single letter marks, and the serial number on the upper tang. It has German silver blade front and Lawrence patent folding ladder rear sights graduated to 800 yards, a musket style forend secured by three bands with a steel forend cap, and straight wrist stock with lightly curved buttplate and patch box.

Rating Definition:

Very good as assembled. The rifle has some traces of the original blue finish and case colors with primarily a mixture of gray and brown patina , some patches of oxidation and minor pitting, and some scattered nicks and scratches. The hammer, buttplate, patch box, and barrel bands have retouched case colors and some of the screws have a niter blue finish. The refinished stock is very good with some minor scratches and bruises. The replaced forearm is very fine with sharp inspectors initials. Mechanically excellent, with mostly clear markings.
