Description:

This well aged rifle musket was manufactured at the Richmond Armory while it was still under the State of Virginia's control, using materials captured at Harper's Ferry in April 1861. The only legible markings are "1861" vertically behind the hammer, "RICHMOND VA" horizontally ahead of the hammer, and the small "U" marks on the right side of the front two barrel bands. It has a U.S. Model 1855 style walnut stock with iron buttplate and patch box which is not common. After mid-1862, the Richmond Armory used stocks shipped from Georgia. It is equipped with a blade front and folding two leaf rear sight. The sling swivels either broke or were cut off from the studs. It includes a swelled shank tulip head ramrod

Rating Definition:

Fair., especially for a Confederate weapon. Most of the surfaces have a brown patina with oxidation and pitting of varying degrees; the area near the breech, patch box, and buttplate are more heavily pitted than the rest. The heavily worn wood is in fair shape with a crack in the left side of the butt and otherwise less significant scrapes, dings, and strike marks than would be expected. Mechanically fine. Overall, this rifle musket with its rare components is in better than average condition for a surviving Confederate piece.
