Description:

This is a rare example of a Confederate Model 1855 type rifle manufactured at the armory in Fayetteville, North Carolina. The Fayetteville rifles were manufactured using parts and machinery captured from U.S. Arsenals at Harpers Ferry and Fayetteville. This is a "Type IV" rifle that had a total production of only about 5,000. It features a low profile lock plate, brass buttplate, trigger guard, barrel bands and forearm cap. The lock plate is dated "1863" behind the hammer and marked with an eagle over "C.S.A." followed by "FAYETTEVILLE" ahead of the hammer. The left side of the barrel is stamped with "V/P/ Eagle head" proof and inspection marks. The buttplate tang is stamped "CSA" ahead on the top screw. The right side of the barrel bands have the standard "U" marking. It has a blade front sight and an empty dovetail for a rear sight. It is mounted with an oil finished walnut stock with a faint cartouche on the left flat and "J.H.P. 1865" carved into the butt on the right. Includes an incorrect extra length replacement tulip head ramrod.

Rating Definition:

Fair, incomplete with a few missing screws and the rear sight absent. The barrel and lock remains polished bright with pitting, spotting, and scratches. The brass components have a dark aged patina. The wood is fine with numerous scrapes, dings, and minor blemishes from hard use along with a section absent near the hammer. There is some varnish/stain residue on many components indicating that the wood was at one point quickly refinished. Mechanically needs some work; the action will hold and release from half cock but not full.
