Description:

The U.S. Model 1861 type lock plate on this rifle is marked "1863" vertically behind the hammer and "C.S./RICHMOND, VA." at the front. There are no clear marks on the barrel, but it appears to have been U.S. proofed as a faint "V" appears on the upper left flat. It has the model 1861 style front and rear sights with two folding leaves graduated "3" and "5". It is fitted with a walnut stock held by three "U" marked barrel bands with a forend cap, and "A" and "U.S." marked crescent buttplate. There appear to be some filled markings on the left side of the stock that once were "SJJ" and there are sharp cuts/markings under the buttplate that resemble: "III UCC". Sling swivels are mounted to the middle barrel band and the front of the trigger guard. It includes a steel ramrod with tulip head and swelled shank.

Rating Definition:

Fair as assembled. The barrel, front two barrel bands, forend cap, and ramrod have an even brown patina. The barrel may have been browned at one point. The rear barrel band, trigger guard, lock plate, and hammer all have a silver-gray. The buttplate has a golden patina. There is pitting on most components, especially near the breech aside from the trigger plate/lower tang with has some linear light scratches. The hammer head has some material absent. The wood is fair with a separate forend section beginning under the rear barrel band, various scrapes and dings throughout along with some hairline cracks. Mechanically fine with mostly clear markings.
