Description:

Deluxe, factory panel scene engraved, First Model Maynard carbine that was manufactured circa 1859. The carbine has the Maynard tape primer mechanism in the right frame and iron patch box on the right side of the stock. A long, folding, rear sight is mounted on the receiver tang. The part-octagon/part-round barrel has a dovetail mounted, two-leaf, rear sight and a nickel-silver front sight. The barrel is blued and the receiver, hammer, lever, patch box and buttplate are casehardened. The stock is highly figured, fancy grain walnut with a high polish piano finish. An oval silver plate is inlaid in the center of the right side of the stock; the plate is inscribed "HUGH NESBITT" surrounded by scrollwork. The patch box, buttplate heel and bottom, upper and lower tang, hammer and receiver are covered with delicate English scroll engraving on a fine punch dot background. Fanciful animal heads of the type favored by Gustave Young are concealed in the scrollwork on both sides of the receiver and on the patch box door. The sides of the hammer are engraved with an animal head motif. The round primer door on the right side of the receiver is decorated with a detailed game scene which depicts a hound in a woodland setting. The left side of the receiver features a larger game scene that depicts a bear beset by three hounds. The Maynard patent markings on the sides of the frame and patch box are surrounded by shield shaped borders. The style and quality of the engraving indicates that it was almost certainly executed by master engraver Gustave Young.

Rating Definition:

Exceptionally fine. The barrel retains 90% of the original blue finish. The bore is mirror bright. The casehardened receiver, lever, hammer, patch box and buttplate retain 80% of the original finish with a silver/gray patina. The delicate, flawlessly executed, scrollwork and game scenes are extremely crisp. The percussion nipple and hammer face have traces of flash pitting. The fancy grain walnut stock is in excellent condition and retains at least 90% of the high polish piano finish; wear is limited to several period scratches on the left side of the stock near the comb and a few very minor handling marks. This is truly an extraordinary Gustave Young panel scene engraved, First Model Maynard Carbine!
