Description:

This is a very fine Kidder cased inscribed Colt 1849 Pocket Model Revolver that was manufactured in 1861. The back strap is inscribed: "Capt. H.W. Deshler, 15" Regt. O.V.". The revolver has the Colt commercial blue finish on the barrel and cylinder, the loading lever, frame and hammer are color casehardened and the brass trigger and back strap are silver-plated. The one-piece walnut grip has a varnished, "piano" finish. The six-shot cylinder is roll-engraved with the Stagecoach Holdup scene and "COLTS PATENT". The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "ADDRESS COL SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA". "COLTS/PATENT" is stamped in two lines on the left side of the frame. The full serial number, "196629" is stamped on the bottom of the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard, back strap and on the side of the cylinder. The partial serial number "6629" is stamped on the loading lever. All of the visible serial numbers match. The revolver is complete with an American style, five compartment, mahogany case lined with brown velvet. "MANUFACTURED/SOLELY BY W. KIDDER." and "PATENT. APR 1854." is stamped on the top edge of the inside of the case. A picture dealer label for "SPORTSMAN'S DEPOT/ ALFRED WOODHAM" New York is glued to the inside of the lid. The case contains: (1) key, (2) assortment of .31 caliber, lead, round balls and conical bullets, (3) brass bullet mold for round balls and conical bullets marked "COLTS/PATENT" across the top, (4) L-shaped combination nipple wrench/screw-driver, (5) 100 count embossed tin of Eley percussion caps, (6) opened packet of six Hazard's combustible cartridges for Colt Revolving Pocket Pistols and (7) non-Colt powder flask with fixed charger and flying eagle and shield motif on both sides. The 15th Ohio Infantry was mustered into service at Mansfield, Ohio, in September 1861 for three years service. The regiment served with the Armies of the Ohio and the Cumberland and fought at Shiloh, Stones River, Chickmauga, Kenesaw Mountain, Atlanta, Franklin and Nashville as well as numerous lesser engagements. The 15th Ohio Infantry lost 179 officers and men killed in action and 136 officers and men died of disease.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The revolver is all original and retains 70% of the blue, casehardened and silver-plated finish. The loading lever, frame and hammer have vivid case colors. The cylinder retains nearly all of the stagecoach holdup scene. The safety pins are battered but intact. There is light flash pitting on the percussion nipples and front and rear face of the cylinder. The sides of the hammer have light flash pitting. The walnut grips are also in very fine condition with a few minor handling marks and retain nearly 90% of the original piano finish. The markings and inscription are sharp. The action functions perfectly. The case is in fine overall condition. The exterior shows minimal storage and handling wear. The Kidder markings on the edge of the case are crisp. The lining on the bottom of the case is worn from contact with the revolver and accessories and there are several small tears in the fabric on the side of the case and partitions. The cartridge packed has been opened and is missing two cartridges. The flask, bullet mold and combination tool are in very good condition with moderate wear. This is a very fine, Kidder cased, Colt 1849 Pocket Model revolver with Civil War inscription associated with a hard-fighting Civil War regiment.
