Description:

Two factory cased and deluxe engraved Colt Model 2 1855 Sidehammer Pocket revolvers manufactured circa 1859. Each revolver has British London proof and inspection marks stamped on the lower left side of the barrel. The mahogany British style case has a brass plate in the lid and brass reinforcement bands on the corners of the lid and case body. The case has a green baize lining with five compartments. A Colt instruction sheet for Colt sidehammer, "PISTOLS, RIFLES, CARBINES, AND SHOTGUNS," is glued to the inside of the lid. The revolvers have a high polish blue finish on the barrels, frames and five-shot cylinders. The hammers and loading levers are casehardened. The one piece grips are highly figured walnut with a high polish piano finish. The revolvers have deluxe engraving by Gustave Young. The engraving features Young's tight Germanic scrollwork on a punch dot background with additional scroll and border work on the cylinders, scrolls on the muzzles, back straps and butts and scroll work and knurling on the loading levers. A Deluxe Colt Sidehammer revolver with nearly identical engraving (No. 14330) is illustrated and described on page 71 of "THE BOOK OF COLT ENGRAVING" by R.L. Wilson. Wilson's description notes that deluxe engraving on Sidehammer series revolvers is rare. The top flat of each barrel is roll-stamped with the Second Style legend with pointing hand and Maltese crosses. The revolver cylinders are beautifully hand engraved with the Cabin and Indian scene with "COLT'S PATENT" and "Engd by W.L. Ormsby" markings. Revolver "A" has the serial number "21113" stamped on the bottom of the barrel, the side of the cylinder and the butt; Revolver "B" is stamped with the serial number "21030" in the same locations. All of the visible serial numbers on both revolvers match. The case is complete with a bag shaped British powder flask with "COLTS POCKET FLASK" and James Dixon markings on the top, adjustable charger with 2/8, 3/8, and 4/8 dram markings and lanyard ring. The flask has a gold plated top and charger, fire blue spring and brown lacquered body. In addition to the flask, the case contains: (1) two L-shaped screw drivers in a fitted block, (2) pewter Sykes oil bottle, (3) 500 count Eley Bros. tin of percussion caps for Colt's "Belt & Pocket Pistols", (4) cleaning rod with wooden handle, (5) un-marked brass double cavity bullet mold for conical balls with blued sprue cutter and (6) assortment of .28 caliber balls and conical bullets. The bullet mold is not a Colt mold but is original to the casing.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. Both revolvers are all original and retain approximately 80% of the high polish blue and casehardened finish. The deluxe, highly detailed, Germanic scroll engraving is extremely sharp the Cabin and Indian scene on both cylinders is crisp. The highly figured walnut grips are in excellent condition and retain nearly all of the high polish piano finish. Both revolvers have light-moderate flash pitting on the percussion nipples and cylinder faces. The cylinder pin on revolver 21113 has some scattered wrench marks. Revolver 21030 does not cock properly. The case and accessories are in excellent-very good condition. The case exterior is in very good condition; the lid has four hair-line cracks and some shallow handing marks. The green baize lining is clean, un-faded and shows minimal wear. The Colt label is in good condition; wear is limited to several small stains from contact with the revolvers and several small tears on the edges. The Dixon flask is in excellent condition and retains 90-95% of the gold-plated, fire blue and brown lacquer finish. The bullet mold is in very good condition, the brass has a mellow patina and the sprue cutter has all of the dull blue finish. Wear is limited to some small dents in the bottom and right side. The screw drivers have nearly all of the fire-blue finish intact. The cap tin is in excellent condition with nearly all of the lacquer finish on the top and body and the excellent green paper label. The cleaning rod and oil bottle are both in excellent condition. This is an outstanding pair of British proofed and cased Colt Model 1855 Sidehammer revolvers with rarely encountered deluxe factory engraving by Gustave Young.
