Gauge: 67
Barrel: 9 inch octagon
Finish: brown/blue
Grip:
Stock: walnut
Item Views: 2941
Serial Number:
Catalog Page: 33
Class: Antique
Description:

Manufactured circa 1770s. The lock plates of these fine pistols are marked "BARNETT" and also have sliding safeties. The barrels are marked "MIN ORIES/LONDON". Minories is a parish and street in London. The Barnett name is often remembered for the large number of "Northwest" trade guns and "Chief Grade" firearms given to Native American leaders during the colonial era that often bare the name, but a number of arms for military service and some of higher quality for sale to European and Euro-American gentlemen including fowling pieces and pistols have also been seen. This pair of smooth bore pistols have blade front and notch rear sights, gold filled bands at the breech along with the touch hole and pan interiors, detailed engraving including martial motifs, spurred trigger guards with pineapple shaped finials, "JLC" monogrammed silver initial shields, wedge fastened full length stocks with checkered grips and silver escutcheons and ramrods with iron ends.

Rating Definition:

Fine as period refurbished. The pistol retains much of the brown finish with a Damascus style appearance on the barrel and just under half of the blue is visible on the trigger guard which otherwise has a brown patina. Nearly all of the gold fill remains. The stock is very good with crisp checkering aside from a couple small chips, clouding in the varnish, some slight dings and scratches, wear on the left flat edges and a partially loose front escutcheon. Mechanically fine with clear engraving and lettering.
