Description:

This is a fine example of a WWII production K98 sniper rifle that was manufactured by the Gustloff factory. The top of the receiver ring is marked with the "eagle/749" over "bcd" the wartime code for the Gustloff-Werke at Weimar and "4" for the year of manufacture. The right side is marked with the number "1" and two Nazi proofmarks. The left rear portion of the barrel is marked with the Nazi firing proof and the serial number, (86139) while the top left side is stamped "avk Ci". The breech end of the barrel and front of the front receiver ring are roughly milled. The rifle has an unmarked milled front barrel band with a late war stamped lower barrel band. It is fitted with an unmarked milled trigger guard and floor plate. The bolt is fitted with a late war key safety. It has the standard "v" front sight with the sheet metal front sight cover and the standard K98 tangent rear sight graduated to 2,000 meters. It is fitted with the wartime laminated stock and handguard. The right side of the stock has a partial "eagle/H" proof below the stock washer and a very faint, single "C" proof on the lower stock area and it is fitted with a checkered steel buttplate. The rifle is complete with an original cleaning rod, rubber muzzle cover and a cross-hatched brown leather sling. The left side of the receiver is fitted with the long scope base with the corresponding three screws, with locking screws, and two taper pins. The base has a very small partial "eagle/359" proof on the side. It is fitted with a unnumbered long side-rail scope mount with the stamped spring steel scope bands. The mount is unnumbered and has a very small inverted "eagle/359" proof on the front end. The mount is fitted with a wartime scope marked "DIALYTAN/83990/bmj/+" on the left side, with the adjustment dial on top, that is graduated from "1" to "8". It is complete with a set of brown unmarked leather lens covers and a reproduction rubber eye cup. The rifle and scope have the late war matte finish with a blued scope mount and base.

Rating Definition:

Very fine as partially refinished (stock and handguard) with 90% of the original phosphate finish overall with wear and thinning on the exposed barrel and barrel bands with cycling wear on the bolt body. The stock and handguard are both in very good condition with the stock having been lightly cleaned/sanded and restained. The scope base, mount and scope retain 95% of their blue finishes with minor edge and high spot wear overall with clear optics. The rifle itself has matching numbers on the bolt assembly with the remaining parts unnumbered.
