Description:

The Tranter Model 1879 was the last breech loading handgun designed by William Tranter and was designed when he was 63 years old. Examples have been seen with various markings including retailer marks. This nickel plated revolver is marked "COGSWELL & HARRISON 142 NEW BOND ST. LONDON" on the barrel rib and "W. TRANTER'S PATENT/ 4057" on the left side of the frame indicating it was made under license by Cogswell & Harrison at their new address during or after 1879. There are various small British proofs throughout and "450" on the upper left barrel flat. The cylinder, ejector, grip, and right rear of the frame are all marked "66" likely indicating an assembly number. It is equipped with the less commonly seen vertical cylinder arbor release catch, round blade front and frame notch rear sights, and a checkered walnut grip with round buttcap.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The revolver retains 85% plus of the original nickel plating with numerous small spots of flaking/oxidation scattered throughout along with a larger section of brown patina on the front of the trigger guard. There are some light scratches and slight residue. The grip is fine with sharp checkering and only a few minor scratches and dings. Mechanically excellent with legible markings.
