Rare Prototype U.S. Winchester M1 Semi-Automatic Carbine, Serial Number "2" with Unique Magazine

Produced at an unknown date, this Winchester carbine lacks the traditional serial number marking to the rear of the receiver, instead having a number "2" stamped on the underside of the trigger guard, just behind the oil hole for the magazine catch. Showing early production features overall, the carbine is installed in a low wood stock with a "flip-switch" style safety, both later features; it is quite likely that this carbine was a tool room model or demonstration piece for these changes in the M1. Additionally, an extra notch has been cut into the operating rod raceway on the right side of the frame, in the same general area as the second dismount notch seen on later Winchester receivers. Fitted with a blade front sight and "S" marked 2-leaf rear sight, with the standard nomenclature on the chamber, Winchester logo behind the rear sight, and "W" on the recoil plate, fitted with a round bolt, a milled trigger guard, "J.A.O." marked safety, and a "W" marked magazine catch. The stock is fitted with a 4-rivet hand guard, marked only with a small "W" in the sling cut, with a Type 1 barrel bands, oval oiler cut, a green canvas sling, and a checkered steel buttplate. With an unmarked, extended higher capacity straight magazine. Notes from the consignor state that the magazine was an experimental model with 20-round capacity acquired from Norm Flayderman, and that the carbine was part of the collection of the "Winchester Museum", but did not specify if this was Winchester's in-house archive, the museum at the Winchester Mystery House, the National Wild Turkey Federation's Winchester Museum in South Carolina, or the Winchester Arms Collection at the Cody Firearms Museum.

ConditionExcellent, with 95% of the original parkerized finish, showing a mixed brown color on the barrel and front sight, light handling marks and some bright edge wear. The excellent stock shows a few light dings and handling marks. Mechanically excellent.
