Description:

This U.S. Model 1903 Bolt Action rifle was manufactured by the Rock Island Arsenal in 1905 and subsequently upgraded to 30-06 in 1908. The rifle has the pre-WWI features which include low wood "S" grasping groove stock with single reinforcing bolt, hand guard with rear sight relief cut and spring clips, smooth buttplate, grooved trigger small, concave rear sight elevation binding knob and large concave windage knob. "R.I.A./Ordnance Shell & Flame/7-05" marked barrel behind the rear sight. A large "S" is stamped on the stock forearm tip. The receiver is marked with the standard four line marking over the serial number. The left side of the stock is stamped with a boxed "C.N./1908" cartouche. "5" followed by a circled script, "P" proofmark is stamped on the underside of the stock behind the trigger guard. The bayonet lug on the upper barrel band is correctly unmarked. Not stamped with the "H" mark used on Springfield Armory upper barrel bands. Casehardened receiver, bolt sleeve, cocking piece, safety and magazine cut-off. The "ON" face of the cut-off is polished bright and the remaining parts have the dull blue finish used on RIA rifles prior to WWI. The walnut stock and hand guard are oil finished. Includes a brown leather sling marked "ROCK ISLAND ARSENAL/1908/H.E.K."

Rating Definition:

Fine overall with the barrel, barrel bands, trigger guard and floor plate having 85% original finish. The receiver and bolt handle are a mottled gray patina, with the case coloring having silvered. Stock is fine, with clear markings, good grain, and correct oil finish. Buttplate is a mottled brown/red patina, with clear rust spotting. Sling is fine, with the outer layer becoming fragile and powdery. Mechanically excellent.
