This Colt Lighting Small Frame .22 caliber rifle was manufactured in 1888, the second year of production. The barrel has a standard dovetail front sight and fixed notch rear sight and Lyman peep sight. The straight grip, walnut stock has a black, checkered, hard rubber buttplate embossed with the Rampant Colt trademark and the forearm has multi-point checkering. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the Colt Hartford address and 1883, 1885, 1886 and 1887 patent dates in two lines ahead of the rear sight. "22 CAL" is stamped in script on the left side of the barrel between the rear sight and the receiver. The Rampant Colt trademark is marked on the left side of the receiver. The serial number is on the lower tang.

Fine. The rifle retains 60% of the original finish with extensive areas of oxidation. The frame and lower areas have patches of brown gray patina. The stock has been refinished and has a smooth glossy appearance with some minor dings and scratches. The forearm is very good aside from a large chip of wood missing on the front right top with otherwise crisp checkering and only minor scratches. Mechanically fine with clear markings.
