This ornate pistol has a miquelet style lock has no visible makers marks or proofmarks and likely originates from the Mediterranean region, possibly Spain or Italy. The term "miquelet" has been applied to these pistols by collectors and arms historians to distinguish these pistols from other snap lock type pistols that preceded the true flintlocks. The lock mechanism on this pistol has features of both the Spanish patilla miquelet and the Roman/Italian miquelet, but the sear locations indicate Spanish influence if not manufacture. The unmarked barrel tapers from round to octagon. While the lock mechanism is less ornate than many examples, the pistol has heavily ornamented furniture with twisted floral motifs on the inset at the breech, trigger guard and trigger plate, a matching side plate with a dragon or serpent head amongst the floral vines, and a coordinating relief engraved buttcap with a textured background. The full length stock also has some carved accents. It includes a ramrod with horn tip.
