Description:

Jezails were produced by local gunsmiths in the Middle East, Central Asia, and India during the 18th and 19th centuries. During the Anglo-Afghan Wars, Afghan combatants used their Jezails to decimate the British and Indian invaders by taking up positions on the cliffs, valleys, and other protected areas from which they could fire upon their adversaries before they were in range of the British muskets. The Jezail, particularly rifled examples, are said to have been effective at up to 500 yards compared to only 150 yards for the British Brown Bess. The Jezail was often fired from a bipod or by resting the muzzle among the rocks to help steady the long barrels. This example has a Damascus patterned barrel with some relief designs, a post front sight and rear peep sight, and decorative brass barrel bands. The lock plate has no visible marks but was likely adopted from a captured or discarded musket. The nearly full length stock has bone and shell/mother of pearl inlays along its length with a large number of designs on the butt which also has some wire inlay. The stock also have sling swivels and includes an iron ramrod.

Rating Definition:

Fair. Some of the Damascus patterns remain visible on the barrel with otherwise gray-brown patina. The lock has a brown patina with some oxidation and pitting. The brass fittings and accents have an aged patina. The stock is fair with several inlays, chips, and slivers absent; some scrapes and dings, and some cracks and repairs. Mechanically requires some work. Overall, a well worn, but attractive, example of an Jezail musket.
