The bronze is a depiction of the raising the C.S.S. H.L. Hunley on August 8, 2000. The Hunley was a Confederate submarine during the American Civil War and was used in hopes to break the Union naval blockade of Charleston harbor. On February 17, 1864 the H.L. Hunley attacked and sank the Union sloop of war U.S.S. Housatonic when the H.L. Hunley slammed it's spar torpedo into her hull in Charleston's outer harbor. Soon after the Hunley sank, killing all eight of her crew. The H.L. Hunley (although not completely submerged) was the first submarine to successfully sink an enemy vessel. The bronze was created by artist Lonnie Eugene Stewart (Marked with his name, 2000 a.p. #1 "copyright symbol", and measures approximately 38"L x 9"W x 7"H, mounted on a marble table top base with cast iron stand painted white and measures approximately 43"L x 15"W x 30 1/2"H. The bronze also includes a signed framed print titled "Spirits of the Hunley Rising" made by the same artist as the bronze and depicts the spirits of the crew members of the H.L. Hunley rising from the partially sunken submarine to a bright light. The print measures approximately 24"L x 18"H and the matted frame measures approximately 33 1/2"L x 27"H. Also included is a clay model of the submarine that measures approximately 20"L x 3"W x 3"H, the book "The CSS Hunley: The Greatest Undersea Adventure of the Civil War" by Richard Bak, several newspaper articles and periodicals, and a coffee mug from the Friends of the Hunley.

Excellent with a natural bronze finish. Finely detailed with good use of dark and light to create contrast and more depth. The base is excellent with a strong marble and some minimal areas of flaking of white paint on the cast iron stand. The framed print is very good with only the slightest of wear. The clay model is very fine with strong clay finish. The other items are excellent with some discoloration of the newspaper articles.
