Description:

This is an example of the a Civil War era carbine converted after the war by Sharps to fire the .50-70 center fire cartridge. These conversions were refurbished by Sharps during the conversion process and many had their stocks replaced with new stocks without patch boxes. Many of these converted Sharps went on to see hard use during the Indian Wars of the late 19th century. This example has a blade front sight , Laurence patent rear sight with ladder graduated to 800 yards. The barrel has faint "NEW MODEL" markings; the year is even fainter but appears to be "1859". The serial number confirms this as it falls into the correct range for the New Model 1859. The matching serial number is marked on the bottom of the barrel and the upper tang. The receiver and lock have the standard Sharps and Lawrence patent markings. The barrel is marked "F" and "G.C" on the left flat. It is mounted with a smooth oil finished walnut forearm and straight grip stock with a iron carbine buttplate and sling bar and ring. One cartouche is visible on the left side just above the saddle ring bar.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The carbine retains traces of the original finish with primarily a mottled gray-brown patina with scattered spots of erosion, some small scrapes and nicks, crisp action and good bore. The wood has scattered marks and scratches from carrying and storage. Overall, a solid representative example of an Arsenal converted Sharps New Model 1859 that likely saw significant use in the Civil War and following Indian Wars.
